Simple Tips to Help you Eat Local and Eat Healthy Freezer Space

Hello and Happy New Year!   A big thanks for a great 2016 from Emmett Ridge Farm.  We reached more people and raised more animals than we ever have in the past.  Our message and our mission are spreading and we have you to thank for that.

In the few years that we have been farming many people have showed interest and support in what we are doing.  We talk to so many people who love the idea of buying local sustainable meat but are not sure how to get started.

I wanted to share a few tips on how to make purchasing local meat easy and making quick healthy meals for your family a more enjoyable experience.

Freezer Space

The first thing we have to talk about is freezer space.  This is the first obstacle for most people but honestly it is the easiest to tackle.  We have been trained to go to the grocery and buy fresh meat every few days.  This takes time, money and effort.  (Effort to not buy more than we need and effort to get through Kroger without hurting someone or yourself.)  Having a freezer full of fresh, locally produced meat will make your life so much easier.  It makes meal planning, cooking and shopping easier.  Who doesn't need that.

The first step is to clean out your freezer.  If you are anything like me you probably have a lot of good intentions that have been in there for months/years.  Start fresh so you know what you have and how much room you have.  If you don't have a deep freezer it does not mean you cannot buy your meat from Emmett Ridge Farm or another local farm if you know your farmer.  We can sell meat individually.  This means you don't have to buy a half or whole hog or beef in order to buy from us.  ( Warning : You will probably want to do that in the future once you have tasted the bacon).

Just think about some meals you like to make for your family  and what you would need to get you through a few weeks or a month, then head to our website to order.  If you are in the greater Cincinnati area we deliver right to your door for $10.00 on all orders over $100.00.

If you want to make a bigger commitment and get a 1/4, 1/2 or whole beef or hog and don't already have deep freeze there are a ton of options available.   If you have a smaller space we have found that the 5.0 cubic feet freezer are a great amount of space for a single person or family of two. They fit well is small spaces and are easy to keep organized.

This freezer is from Lowes and is $168.00 it is 32 inches high, 22 inches deep and 28 inches wide.  It holds 5 cubic feet of product.  This would be a great option if you have a small space to keep it in.

If you have a basement or garage that is big enough for bigger freezer you have more options.   You can go used and find something on craigslist or something refurbished.  We have had decent luck with these but you have to be careful.

If you want to buy new I would suggest an upright freezer.  They are about the size of a large refrigerator.  They are so much easier to keep organized and keep track of what you have in there.  We don't have one yet and every time I find myself face down in the deep freeze with the lid closing on me I want one.

I hope this helps you overcome the freezer dilemma.  If getting yourself and your family healthy for the new year is one of your goals give us a try.  We have a few sample packs available on the website that will give you a bit of everything to get you started on your journey.

Thanks for your support and business,
